 JANUARY 10, 2012

As part of its upcoming collaboration with the Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) aiming to roll out expansive training activities in MCH/RH/FP and NCD/Prevention areas, HS-STAR project conducted 2 Training of Trainers courses in late December, 2011.

The TOT courses aimed at providing the core teaching faculty from YSMU with modern principles and approaches in clinical skills transfer. Both training courses incorporated principles of adult learning and interactive teaching methodologies. During the trainings, the participants had been able to present the respective thematic topics in new ways, using the newly acquired skills (brainstorming, roleplaying, situation problem solving, and discussions).

Particularly, in December 19-22 HS-STAR NCD advisor Karine Abelyan conducted 4-day trainings for six employees of Yerevan State Medical University internal medicine and cardiology & cardio-emergency faculties. This was an important preparation work before 5-day trainings to be held next year for 150 health providers: family doctors, GPs and cardiologists from ten Yerevan polyclinics. The training will focus on the NCD prevention and widespread heart diseases management new methods. The aim of the trainings is to improve the healthcare quality in those areas.

During the period of December 21-23, HS-STAR MCH/RH/FP advisor Gohar Panajyan conducted a 3-day Training on Trainers (ToT) for 10 faculty members of YSMU representing the departments of Family Medicine and Obstetrics/Gynecology. During the course, apart from lectures, the participants had a chance for active interaction, presentation of examples of interactive teaching techniques, demonstration of clinical skills transfer using learning guides and corresponding anatomical manikins, bringing up questions and discussing them as a group. At the beginning and at the end of the TOT course the participants completed pre and posttest questionnaires. At the last day of the training, the participant faculty members shared with their preferable schedules of regional/Yerevan-based training activities and received sets of corresponding Trainers’ manuals for the upcoming training courses. The upcoming training activities in MCH/RH sphere will be carried out in 3 content areas- Emergency Obstetric Care, Preconception care principles and Basics of counseling in Family Planning/Reproductive Health.
